Reps: 63 agencies fraudulently wasted N2 trillion

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of the House of Representatives has called 63 agencies of the Federal Government for inquiry for allegedly implementing authorized budgets totaling N2 trillion.

According to the Committee, its inquiry established that the National Assembly did not legally approve the budget.

Oluwole Oke, the chairman of the committee who issued the summons, also requested proof of the National Assembly’s budget approvals in a letter to Ben Akabueze, the director general of the Federation’s budget office.

On November 10, 2022, the Budget Office received the letter, which was dated November 8, 2022.

The House committee claimed that the summons followed President Muhammadu Buhari’s statement that some agencies were using unapproved expenditures when he presented the 2023 budget to the National Assembly on October 7.

The letter is addressed to “Some Government Owned Enterprises and Non-Treasury Funded Agencies” and is entitled “Re-Request for Information/Documents with Respect to Allegations of Illegal Approvals of Budgets and Extra-Constitutional Expenditure.”

In accordance with the authority granted to the National Assembly (Assembly) by Sections 88 and 89 of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) (Constitution), the Standing Rules of the House of Representatives, and based on Section,

I hereby request that the Budget Office of the Federation provide the committee with the approved Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) budget of the following parastatals for the period of 2015–2022, in accordance with the foregoing and Sections 88 and 89 of the Constitution.

“Kindly submit the above documents/information to Suite 4.23 House of Representatives Building, National Assembly, on or before Friday, November 16, 2022, at the end of the business.

More specifically, Oke noted that “almost N2 trillion was spent illegally.

These budgets have never been submitted by or approved by the president. They must explain to Nigerians why they are running unauthorized budgets that were not created in accordance with the law.
